I have a story for you

Salaam Alaykum,

I hope you’re doing well.

My weekly newsletter usually includes actionable advice that will help you.

But this week I want to do something a little different.

I want to feel less like a teacher and more like a brother to you.

(Yes, sometimes I really do feel like a teacher, lol.)

So let me share a story from last week.

I was in the office at my day job with a co-worker.

We work for a gas company, and Allahumma baarik, he’s a pious Muslim man.

He told me about how a haram business opportunity came his way.

A guy in our industry approached him with an underground supplier.

This supplier had cheaper gas…but it was stolen.

The guy bragged about how he made higher profit margins working with him. And he offered to sell it to us too.

My co-worker told him, “We’re not interested.”

Not because we didn’t need the money (we actually did).

But because he knew that haram earnings never bring good fruits.

Right there, I realized how important it is to have pious Muslims around you at work.

If he had been swayed by the promise of high profits, he might have convinced me to go along with it.

And if I said yes, the company would have made more money...

But we would have sacrificed something far more valuable than money: Barakah.

Alhamdulilah, Allah saved us from that.

In a world where people prioritize profit, I want you to prioritize Barakah.

I remember walking away from a shady business deal myself when I felt the conversation heading towards lying to a client.

And no i’m not pious or anything.

Allah showed me right from wrong.

Yes, I got mocked for it later. But I’d rather be mocked by people than have Allah angry with me.

This reminds me of the hadith where the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Islam began as something strange and will go back to being strange, so glad tidings to the strangers.” (Ibn Majah)

Don’t be afraid to be a stranger sometimes.

Nothing is worth compromising your deen for.

Not even high profit margins.

Ali
