I quit Dropshipping because it was haram (and lost $6k)

Here's the full story

As-Salamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

I want to tell you something I've never really opened up about.

I spent five years chasing a dream that wasn't meant for me.

It started in 2019, right after high school.

I searched "how to make money online" and stumbled across dropshipping.

The idea hooked me immediately.

You could sell products you don't even own.

Customers pay you. You pay the supplier. You keep the difference.

Simple. Scalable. “Get rick quick”. Or so I thought.

I tried store after store throughout uni.

Nothing worked.

Then COVID hit, I got a mentor, made around a thousand dollars, and felt like I was finally onto something.

So I went all in.

Facebook ads. Products. Testing. Scaling.

Over five years, I spent over six thousand dollars trying to make it work.

It never did.

And then I came across something that stopped me cold.

In Islam, you're not supposed to sell what you don't own.

Dropshipping (by its very nature) requires you to act like you own a product sitting in a warehouse in China that you've never even touched.

I sat with that for a while.

Because this was my dream.

I had the mentor. I had the budget. I had the drive.

All I had to do was keep going.

But the Prophet ﷺ said:

"The halal is clear and the haram is clear, and between them are doubtful matters..." (Sahih al-Bukhari 52, Sahih Muslim 1599)

And I had doubt in my chest.

So I made the call.

In 2024, I quit dropshipping for good.

Five years. Six thousand dollars. Done.

And I chose writing.

Not because it was the most obvious path.

But because it was the most honest one for me.

I could build a personal brand, serve people, and earn.

Without speaking to a camera, without faking customer reviews, without fake scarcity timers, without pretending to own something I didn't.

Here's what I want you to take from this.

As a business owner, you will face moments where the money is right there.

All you have to do is say yes.

But if there's doubt in your chest about how pure that income is, don't ignore it.

Consult a scholar. Sit with it. Be honest with yourself.

And know this:

Sometimes Allah closes a door not to punish you, but to protect you.

The fact that dropshipping never worked for me wasn't a failure.

It was a blessing I didn't understand at the time.

Alhamdulillah, I understand it now.

And that clarity is what led me to build something I'm genuinely proud of.

Which brings me to this.
